Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels are commonly called chipmunks, a native American name meaning "red squirrel," except that they are generally larger than your average chipmunk.  Native to most forested areas of North America, they are one of the most appealing creatures due to their gregarious nature and sheer cuteness.  They are also photogenic creatures since they tend to perch on prominent lookouts to keep an eye on their surroundings (and you) and alert other squirrels to run for cover when danger is near.  They are also notorious beggars and will hang around campgrounds and picnic areas looking for leftovers.  Like many animals (and humans), squirrels will eat whatever tastes good, whether it's good for them or not.  Since their primary food source is wild nuts and berries, it is recommended that you don't feed them, as they will become obese and unfit just like humans who eat too much junk food.  If you must feed the squirrels, unsalted peanuts (in moderation) serve as an excellent source of protein.
