Lots of people ask me how to start a club. So here are some hints.
1. Produce flyers to be posted at local hobby shops that sell Hot Wheels. That's where most of the Hot Wheels collectors will go to find new issues and limited editions.
2. Place a few classified ads in the local newspaper promoting a new club. Be sure to provide your name and phone number so that interested parties can reach you.
3. Decide how you want to operate it - as a forum for discussion, or a swap meet for buying, selling and trading.
4. Decide where you want to hold meetings and how often. Once a month seems to work well here in Central Oregon. A local pizza place is often available free of charge if participants buy their lunch while they're there. (There, I used all three spellings in one sentence.)
5. You'll need to establish a mailing list and flyers to announce meeting dates and times.
6. A newsletter is optional in this kind of arrangement but helps keep members informed on the latest finds.
7. Dues are necessary to help cover club expenses such as printing and mailing. $1-2 per month, or $12-$24 a year is not unusual.
8. In the case of a swap meet club, determine whether or not you wish to set a limit on prices, say $1.25, on standard issues.

04-14-99:  We have grown so much, we now hold two meeting per month. The "official business" meetings are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month at McClellan AFB off Watt Ave in North Sacramento.  Pre-meeting selling/trading (under club's bylaws) starts as early as 5:30pm and goes until 6:30pm at which time the meeting is called to order.  After club business is completed, the sell/trading resumes.  The second "sell/trade" meeting is held every 3rd Wednesday in Carrow's Restaurant located at 2800 J street in mid-town Sacramento.  There is no club business discussed at this meeting.  This meeting is just for selling/trading and socializing.  This meeting was voted on by members due to the rate at which Hot Wheels are being released and the need to keep their collections as current as the pegs will allow.
