Photography Main Page

Here is a record of birds I've photographed around Bend, Oregon, (except where noted.)
The reason I've chosen birds to photograph is that they are simly the most abundant wildlife.
As you'll see below, some photos are less than optimal, so as I am able to take
better photos of specific birds, I'll be replacing the not-so-good ones.

As an exception to my own rule of posting only my own photos, I couldn't resist this sharp photo of a male Bufflehead taken by Jim Boardman, which I downloaded from Dreamstime.com.

Above:  Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) male (above right) with two females behind (above left), Mirror Pond, Deschutes River
January 16th, 2009
Note:  Normally, it's difficult to get a good, sharp photo of these shy birds since they prefer to stay out in the middle of a lake,  a large pond or the widest part of a river, and rarely if ever stray close to the shore.

Coots are members of the Rail family of marsh birds (not ducks).

Above:  Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus)
 Reynolds Pond, Alfalfa, Oregon
May 12th, 2010
The Double-crested Cormorant is known to travel farther inland than any other cormorant.  This blurry photo confirms the rare sighting almost 200 miles east of the Pacific coast.

Above:  Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis)
Sparks Lake flood plain

July 3rd, 2009
Note:  The Sandhill Crane, photographed from a distance of about 150 yards, is the first I've seen in Central Oregon.  As I cautiously walked across the soggy Sparks Lake floodplain to try to get a closer shot, the wary bird kept moving farther away.  So this is the best photo I could get.

Above:  Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto)
Harmon Park
May 11, 2012
The Collared Dove was introduced into the Bahamas in the 1970s and spread from there to Florida by 1982. It has become invasive; the stronghold in North America is still the Gulf Coast, but it is now found as far south as Veracruz, as far west as California, and as far north as Alaska, the Great Lakes, and Nova Scotia. Some of the more distantly dispersed records may refer to local escapes from captivity. Its impact on other species there is as yet unknown.

Note:  Swallows in flight are nearly impossible to capture with a camera.  The Violet-green and Northern Rough-winged Swallows pictured here were photographed catching bugs over the Deschutes River while whizzing past me about 10-20 feet away at 25-30  miles per hour.  A telephoto lens zoomed to its maximum of 300mm, along with photo-cropping resulted in these somewhat blurry pictures.  That's why I included the stock photo above by Michael Woodruff of Spokane, Washington, downloaded from
Dreamstime.com.
