If you were ever subscribed to LimeWire (shut down by court mandate) or some other file sharing service, (or even if you weren't,) you might find it interesting to note how many songs file sharers have attributed to the wrong artist.  So that you don't fall into the category of musical ignorami, here are the examples I've found, listed in alphabetical order by song title, a few with some background information:

"Absolutely (Story of a Girl") - Nine Days (NOT Green Day, Matchbox 20, Nine Inch Nails, Third Day, Third Eye Blind, or 3 Doors Down)

"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" - Jennifer Holliday / Jennifer Hudson -- Although Jennifer Hudson sang the song in the 2006 movie "Dreamgirls," it was Jennifer Holliday who first sang this song in the 1982 Broadway musical based on the chronicles of the Supremes. Then, in November 2006, 11-year-old Bianca Ryan performed a powerful rendition of the song on the TV show "America's Got Talent".

"Baby Come Back - Player (NOT Ambrosia or The Bee Gees)

"Barbie Girl" - Aqua (NOT Good Charlotte)

"Billy Don't Be a Hero" - Bo Donaldson & the Heywoods (NOT Terry Jacks; Paper Lace reportedly recorded the song for the UK.1)

"Bittersweet Symphony" - The Verve (NOT The Verve Pipe; The Verve is from Great Britain; The Verve Pipe is from Lansing, Michigan)

"Black Velvet" - Alannah Myles (NOT Pat Benatar, Bonnie Raitt, Heart, Melissa Etheridge, Tanya Tucker, Roseanne Cash or Alanis Morissette!)

"Blinded By The Light" - Manfred Mann's Earth Band (NOT Steve Miller Band; originally written and performed by Bruce Springsteen)

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" - Deep Blue Something (NOT Matchbox 20)

"Brown Eyed Girl" - Van Morrison (NOT James Taylor)

"Can't Get Enough of You Baby" - The Colourfield (NOT Smash Mouth)

"Cleveland Rocks" - The Presidents of the United States of America (NOT Cheap Trick)

"Closing Time" is actually entitled "Take Me Home" by Chris Beckett (NOT Green Day); also performed by Semisonic as "Closing Time"

"Color My World" - Chicago (NOT Blood, Sweat & Tears)

"Crazy Train" - Originally performed by Ozzie Osbourne, "Crazy Train" is one of the hard rock / heavy metal tunes rendered in swing jazz style by Pat Boone (yes, Pat Boone, not Richard Cheese, as some have mistakenly attributed it) on his 1997 album "In A Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy." Here is a song list from that album:

"I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore" - REO Speedwagon (NOT Chicago)

"I Hear You Knockin'" - Dave Edmunds (NOT Joe Walsh, even though it sounds a lot like him)

"I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" - Grand Funk Railroad (NOT Blood, Sweat & Tears)

"Incense and Peppermint" - Strawberry Alarm Clock (NOT Tommy James & The Shondells)

"Jimmy Olson Blues" - Spin Doctors, from the album "Pocketful of Kryptonite" (NOT entitled "Just Go Ahead Now" or "Pocketful of Kryptonite")

"Just Remember I Love You" - Firefall (NOT England Dan & John Ford Coley)

"Killing Me Softly" - Roberta Flack (NOT Carly Simon or Carol King)

"Lady in Red" - Chris DeBurgh (NOT Roy Orbison)

"Love Is In The Air" - John Paul Young (NOT Cat Stevens, although Cat Stevens might have written it)

"Lovers In A Dangerous Time" - Bruce Cockburn (cover version also performed by Bare Naked Ladies)

"Misty Blue" - Dorothy Moore [1976] (Although "Misty Blue" was performed by many artists since its separate debuts in 1966 by both Engelbert Humperdinck and Eddy Arnold, this Bobby Montgomery composition was a big hit on the R&B charts in 1976 when it was performed by Dorothy Moore on her album of the same name. Among many others, Ella Fitzgerald sang a rendition of it in 1993, Mary J. Blige in 1999 and Sheena Easton in 2000. Others noted for performing either a vocal or instrumental version include Connie Francis, Floyd Cramer, Ferlin Husky, Cristy Lane, Gwen McCrae and Reba McEntire. "Please Come to Boston" - Dave Loggins (NOT Kenny Loggins or Loggins & Messina)

"Queen of Hearts" - Juice Newton (NOT Roseanne Cash)

"Real Wild Child (Wild One)" - Iggy Pop, whose real name is James Newell Osterberg (NOT Billy Idol)

"Ride Captain Ride" - Blues Image (NOT Blood, Sweat & Tears)

"Sad Eyes" - Robert Johns [1979] (NOT Leo Sayer)

"Seasons In The Sun" - Terry Jacks (NOT The Hollies)

"Secret Agent Man" - Johnny Rivers (NOT The Guess Who)

"(Honey You Are My) Shining Star" - The Manhattans (NOT The Manhattan Transfer)

"Soulful Strut" - Young-Holt Unlimited, 1968 (although performed by George Benson, Kim Waters, Floyd Cramer, Grover Washington, Jr. and others, it was NOT performed by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Love Unlimited Orchestra or Booker T. & the MG's)

"Story of a Girl" - See "Absolutely" (actual title) - Nine Days

"Stuck In The Middle With You" - Stealer's Wheel (NOT Steve Miller Band)

"Sugar Shack" - Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs (NOT Tommy Roe)

"Sugar Sugar" - The Archies (NOT Tommy James & the Shondells. The Archies were a fictitious band created by Don Kirschner and fronted by lead singer Ron Dante for a cartoon show based on the comic book characters of Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead)

"Superman" - Adam's Attic - (NOT Green Day)

"Sweet City Woman" - The Stampeders (NOT The Guess Who or April WIne)

"This Magic Moment" - originally performed in 1964 by the Drifters and popularized in 1969 by Jay and the Americans (NOT Roy Orbison)

"Tubthumping (I Get Knocked Down)" - Chumbawamba (NOT Smash Mouth or Adam Ant)

"Unchained Melody" - The Righteous Brothers (NOT Roy Orbison) although many renditions have been recorded by other artists

"Vehicle" - The Ides of March (NOT Blood, Sweat & Tears)

"Walking In Memphis" - Marc Cohn (NOT Bruce Springsteen, Bruce Hornsby or John Hiatt; although Lonestar performed a cover version, as did Billy Joel.)

"We Don't Need No Education" - Pink Floyd (actual title is "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2")

"What I Like About You" - The Romantics (NOT The Kinks)

"When She Smiles" (see "Absolutely") - Nine Days

"Who's Sorry Now?" - Connie Francis, 1958 (NOT Patsy Cline)

"Wild One" (actual title "Real Wild Child") - Iggy Pop (NOT Billy Idol)

"You're So Vain" - Carly Simon (NOT Carole King)

"Yummy Yummy Yummy" - Ohio Express (NOT The Archies); also performed "Chewy Chewy Chewy" in the ultimate tribute to bubblegum pop music of the 1960s

"You Can Do Magic" - America (NOT Ambrosia)

"You Just Call Out My Name" - Carole King (actual title is "You've Got a Friend"), composed and also performed by James Taylor

...And by the way, Seals and Crofts ("Summer Breeze", "Diamond Girl", "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)") are Jim Seals and Dash Crofts. "England" Dan Seals is Jim's brother and half of England Dan and John Ford Coley ("I'd Really Love to See You Tonight", "Nights Are Forever Without You").
