HOT WHEELS CLASSICS Series 1 - 2005

The best thing to come from Mattel in quite a while is this new series of 25 models called Hot Wheels Classics.  But to say there are just 25 models in the series is misleading.  Each model is issued in five colors, enlarging the series to 125 models.  In addition, wheel variations have also been found.  The ‘57 Chevy, for instance, is not only issued in different colors, it also sports larger rear wheels on some variations.

What is great about this assortment is the choice of models and color schemes.  Gone are the outrageously unreal castings and the excessive graphics covering the cars.  Instead, the collection represents a purist approach, resulting in some of the best real car models to come out of the Hot Wheels factory in years.

Hot Wheels Classics retail for $2.99, but they have been seen for $1.99 at a few stores.  According to Tom Street, they were not supposed to be sold for $1.99, and the retailer selling them for that price will not be receiving another order from Mattel.  (How Mattel finds that out about it, I don’t know.)

As for the colors, they are sometimes difficult to define.  Antifreeze green is often called lime green, so antifreeze is used for standardization. Likewise, olive is also called avocado, so olive is used for standardization.  As for the Volkswagen Beetle, the VW logo is always present but sometimes so close to the color of the car that it is not initially noticed.
